EQUIPMENT SUGGESTIONS: A sturdy tripod is a necessity for good landscapes. Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment (know which button does what!) before the workshop. I suggest a SLR camera with a wide-angle lens, (17-35mm range) and a zoom or fixed lens, like a 70-200 or 300mm. We have also had some point and shoot shooters attend as well; so don’t feel you have buy that latest and greatest. There’s a lot to learn just by seeing things.

LOCATION:

“Almost heaven West Virginia” goes the line in the famous song, “Country Roads” by John Denver. You’ll become a believer as the autumn colors frame magnificent landscapes in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.

Beginning our journey at the magnificent Blackwater Falls State Park, we’ll find creeks and waterfalls accented by peak fall colors. The nearby Dolly Sods Wilderness is a great spot for sunrise. Dolly Sods is well known for its open expanses of sphagnum bog, heath shrubs and scattered and stunted red spruce — all creating impressions of areas much farther north. It is the highest plateau east of the Mississippi River. We will also visit an interesting rock formation with great colors and spacious views at Spruce Knob Seneca Rocks.

We will finish the trip by traveling 3 hours south to shoot the famed Grist Mill at Babcock State Park and check out the dramatic view down into the New River Gorge near Fayetteville.

I will be assisted on this trip by local photographer, Deb Snelson. She has attended one of my workshops in the past and has great working knowledge of the West Virginia Highlands and will be an asset to our photo adventures.

A rugged, whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent.
