Photo Workshops 2008;
All workshops are priced at $599.00 in 2008. Pricing is for instruction only. Participants are responsible for their own lodging, meals and transportation. We will meet at selected motels (listed under workshop descriptions) and car pool to photo locations. Cancellation policy- full refund if 30 days advance notice is given, less than 30 days, the a 80% refund will be returned.
All workshops convene on a Thursday evening where we will get to know each other and go over our plans for the next 2 and half days. There will also be time for a portfolio review, so bring along your prints or laptop. All workshops end after the Sunday morning session.
I’ve put together another exciting photo workshop schedule together for 2008. From dramatic landscapes brimming with wildflowers, roaring waterfalls and golden autumn colors to the human element of real working cowboys in action, Native American pow wows and rodeo action, there is something for everyone. You can sign up with other “more publicized” workshops and be herded in with the masses. With our line of workshops you can be guaranteed of an abundance of personal attention as our class size ranges from 3-9 students. If we have over 9 sign-ups, there will a special guest photographer who will assist us.
There’s no substitute for spending your time with an experienced Montana photographer who knows the best locations and the best times to be there. Our workshops don’t bring in out-of-state photographer instructors who don’t know their way around! These are no-stress workshops; I utilize a laid-back teaching approach that works very well, no matter what your skill level is.
Equipment suggestions for the workshops;
A sturdy tripod is a necessity for good landscapes. Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment (know which button does what!) before the workshop. I suggest a SLR camera with a wide-angle lens, (17-35mm range) and a zoom or fixed lens, like a 70-200 or 300mm. We have had some point and shoot shooters attend as well; so don’t feel you have buy that latest and greatest. There’s a lot to learn just by seeing things. We also touch on working on your images in the computer during our afternoon class sessions. My main philosophy in teaching these workshops is teaching the camera basics in manual mode, like shutter speed and aperture, so you can control what the final image looks like instead of the camera. “P” Program mode stands for things I can’t say in a public forum.
Most importantly I will attempt to teach you the art of “learning to see”. It really helps with compositions. I’ll convince you of all the advantages of shooting digital images in the RAW format. You will be amazed at how much better your images will look after a weekend! I’ve had a great track record of past students who have made significant strides in their photography skills.

April 3-6, 2008 - The Utah Desert in Spring
St George Utah- Zion National Park
Get a jump on your spring shooting by exploring the wonderful desert country near St George Utah. I have been visiting this magical spot in the desert for nearly 15 years. Trust me, there are unlimited photographic possibilities here. The claret cup cactus is usually blooming and there is ample water flowing in the creeks, streams and waterfalls to make great images. We can visit nearby parks like Zion, Bryce and Escalante National Monument. This class will be limited to the first 6 signups, thus ensuring a quality workshop.
We will meet at the Comfort Inn in Hurricane on Thursday evening @ 6pm on April 3rd.
Comfort Inn 435-635-3500 (make your reservations early on all workshops!)
May 15-18, 2008 - Montana’s Mission Valley in Spring
May is one of my favorite months to shoot images in Montana. It’s greening up in the valley floor, there is abundant water with lots of migrating birds and there are dramatic snow-capped mountains looming over this spectacular landscape. One of the best places in which to capture this picture postcard environment is the Mission Valley of Montana. The valley is extremely striking with the Mission Mountain Range rising abruptly in the east from the valley floor. There really aren’t too many places in Montana that can rival this setting. From our base in Polson, we will have amazing opportunities to capture springtime in Montana at its finest. Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater natural lake in the west, the National Bison Range will just be opening and there should be newborn bison calves, the clay cliffs along the Flathead River and plenty of rural roads with access to the Ninepipes and Pablo National Wildlife Refuges are just some of the possibilities with this special workshop.
We will meet on Thursday, May 15th in Polson, Montana @ 6pm

June 5-8, 2008 - Open Range Lewistown, Montana
We meet in the center of our wonderful state in the charming small town of Lewistown. We have many options to explore and photograph. We will be going to a real signature Montana event, a cattle branding at the Tucker and Scott Hughes ranch. We will also go to another ranch, the Bob and Kathy Lee Ranch near Judith Gap where we will photograph cowboy models and horses in meadows full of prairie wildflowers in the foothills of the scenic Big Snowy Mountains.
We may visit one of the few ferries that still cross the Wild and Scenic section of the Missouri River. The ferry, in its beautiful setting, makes a wonderful subject to photograph. We can also go to unbelievably scenic spots high above the Missouri and Judith Rivers breaks. There are also rustic old wooden grain elevators and an abundance of wildflowers for our lenses to capture during this fabulous weekend. One of the best features of this workshop is the opportunity to meet some of the nicest and most genuine folks you will ever meet. This is Montana!
We will meet on Thursday June 5th @ 6pm at the Super 8 in Lewistown.
Lodging; Super 8 Motel 406-538-2581
July 10-13, 2008 - Glacier Summer Wildflower and Pow Wow
You can’t beat being in Glacier National Park during this week when the prairie wildflowers on the park’s eastern flank are at peak bloom. From our base in St. Mary, the palette is always full in the park with a wide variety of wildflowers, waterfalls, hidden lakes and the occasional wildlife opportunity sighting. Plus we have a pretty good track record getting that elusive red sky over Wild Goose Island, albeit @ 5am!
We also have the good fortune of being just a short drive from attending the annual North American Indian Days Pow Wow in Browning. Colorful attire, great dancing, plus a rodeo and bareback horse relay races keep us hopping. It is a wonderful evening that leaves everyone with a smile on his or her face.
We will meet on Thursday, July 10th at 6pm at the Lodge in St Mary.
Lodging; The Resort at Glacier 406-732-4431, KOA has camping and cabins, 800-562-1504, camping at St Mary campground also available.
September 25-28, 2008 Glacier National Park Autumn Aspens
This is a great time to visit Glacier National Park. The crowds of summer tourists are gone and the aspen groves put on their annual dazzling show. This year we will base on the park’s eastern Rocky Mountain Front side near East Glacier. Waterfalls, rivers, creeks, beaver ponds and all the wonderful color will keep our cameras humming. It is a relaxing time of year with unsurpassed beauty and we don’t have to get up at 4am in the morning!
We will meet on Thursday, September 25th at 6pm at the Circle R Motel in East Glacier.
Lodging; The Whistling Swan Motel 406-226-4412, Circle R 406-226-9331 or Glacier Park Lodge 406-892-2525
October 2-5,2008 UP Michigan Autumn Color

I have been going to the U.P. of Michigan almost every autumn for last several years. The reasons I keep going back are the unbelievable autumn colors! This place rivals anywhere else in the country for color, and without the crowds, like in New England. I would like to invite you to join me on this year’s trip. We would rendezvous in the college town of Houghton. You can fly directly into Houghton airport via Northwest Airlines from Minneapolis or drive there.
Our shutters will really get a workout. From our base in Houghton we will have a limitless supply of lakes, river, creeks and waterfalls all encased in a beautiful hardwood forest bursting with gold, oranges and reds. This is the peak week for color in the upper Midwest and we will be there to capture it! We will travel up the Keweenaw Peninsula first for lighthouses, spectacular color and maybe a sports shooting session with local models. For the second half of the trip, we will explore the fantastic Porcupine Pine Mountains State Park with the scenic Lake of the Clouds and numerous nearby waterfalls.
Lodging; Thursday and Friday evening; Best Western Franklin Square Hotel in downtown Houghton 888-487-1700
Saturday evening; American Inn in Silver City, 906-885-5311
October 16-19, 2008 - Glacier National Park Autumn Tamaracks
We are lucky in Montana; we get two distinct autumn seasons! While the aspen groves turn on Glacier National Park’s eastern side, a few weeks later the western side is ablaze with the golden color of the tamarack, aka larch trees. We will base in my hometown of Whitefish where there are many lakes, creeks and rivers to accent the wonderful colors. We will have plenty of time to explore Glacier National Park’s western side at a relaxed place, as the park is really uncrowded at this time of year. Waterfalls, rivers, creeks, beaver ponds and all the wonderful color will keep our cameras humming.
Lodging; Grouse Mountain Lodge, 877-862-1505 or www.grousemountainlodge.com

-- Testimonials --
Hi Chuck,
Thanks so much for yet again a superb experience. Especially appreciated were the contacts with the ranchers, and the close-up and personal view of their lifestyles, so foreign to me.
As before, my photos are getting wonderful reviews - the galloping horse photos were the favorites, products of the new techniques we learned. And of course, the landscapes of Montana, the Missouri river breaks, and the barns made wonderful subjects.
Having you know all the best locations, people, times, and angles is priceless!

Chuck,
Thanks for the great workshop in GNP! I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and returned with some great images.
-Jack Bell Montana
It is the first step on my journey to becoming an amateur photographer. Now when I read the books they will make a whole lot more sense and I may actually learn something. It's been a great weekend and the group was really fun. You are extremely patient and generous with your vast knowledge and experience, very laid back and approachable. After I got over the shock of having to work in manual...!!! Of course, it was the right thing to do.
