Itinerary:

Day 1– June 23 Meet and greet at 6pm in Portland, Maine.
Best Western 700 Main Street in South Portland 207-774-6151
We will go out to photograph the scenic Portland Head Lighthouse at sunset.

Day 2– June 24  We’ll go out early to catch the Portland Head Lighthouse again and the scenic Maine coastline. After breakfast, we’ll check out the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse as we make our way “down east” to Northeast Harbor and Acadia National Park. We’ll stay at the very cool Asticou Inn which has fantastic gardens, that if cloudy, will make for great macro subjects. We’ll visit Bass Harbor Lighthouse for sunset.

Day 3– June 25 Another splendid day exploring in Acadia, We can visit the marshlands near Bernard and lobster boats in small harbor towns. Where we decide to go will be weather dependent -sunrise along the rocky east side cliffs, Cadillac Mountain sunrise, Jordan Pond, the carriage roads and bridges. So many options!  Asticou Inn

Day 4– June 26 More Acadia National Park to explore. Asticou Inn

Day 5– June 27 After one more morning in Acadia,  we make our way to the small town of Machias. We’ll stay at the Machias River Inn which is next door to Helen’s Restaurant and her world famous local blueberry pie. Bogs where colorful pitcher plants reside and the West Quoddy Lighthouse will conclude the day.

Day 6– June 28 These are the days many of you are awaiting! Captain Andy from Bold Coast Charter will take us out to a small island that is actually owned by both Canada and the U.S. We will have the opportunity to photograph thousands of atlantic puffins as they leave their chicks in nests under the rocks to go feed in the ocean and then bring back mouthfuls of fish for the nesting chicks. There are also razorbills and common murres seabirds and harbor seals along the rocky shores. Though, I’ve had good luck with past trips, we cannot guarantee this outing as sometimes inclement weather prohibits a safe landing. I have booked this trip for two consecutive days to increase our odds of making landing or just doubling our birding opportunities. Machias River Inn

Day 7- June 29 Another fantastic day of photographing seabirds with Bold Coast Charter. Machias River Inn

Day 8- June 30 We will backtrack and check out quaint Schoodic Head (part of Acadia NP) and working lobstermen in Winter Harbor. Workshop concludes after the morning session.

Location:

I really have the itinerary nailed down for this trip. We will cover a variety of subjects that will leave you with many cherished memories of such a beautiful and unique slice of America.

One of the highlights of this workshop will be a trip to Machias Seal Island with Captain Andy where we will photograph Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, Arctic Terns, and more. The birds literally land right atop the blinds. We will have 2 hours in the blinds, so make sure you have plenty of card space and battery life! Please read this about the trip as it requires transferring to a small boat to land on the island. Make sure you can do this part!. I have booked two consecutive to increase our odds of making a landing on the island (not guaranteed).  https://www.boldcoast.com/faq.htm

I believe that you will really enjoy the laid-back small-town Maine lifestyle and come back with many memorable images. Everyone who has taken this class previously has loved it.

Make sure that your flight schedule has some flexibility for possible delays. You may want to consider coming in a day early or have an early flight into Boston, Bangor, or Portland, Maine (I found good flights into here).

If you would like to save a few bucks and help us reduce our carbon imprint, please consider coordinating with your fellow participants about carpooling in the rental cars. Let me know and I will set up a group email for you to coordinate this…

Equipment Suggestions:

A sturdy tripod is a necessity for good landscapes. Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment (know which button does what!) before the workshop. I suggest a SLR camera with a wide-angle lens (15-35mm range), 24-105mm lens is my workhorse on these trips and a medium telephoto lens up to 100-500mm.
