Location:
I’m back! It had been a bit of a struggle to secure lodging on the east side of this extremely popular National Park over the past few years. I did lock down 8 precious rooms for each session at the St Mary Lodge West Motel during the peak of the summer season.
If you haven’t been to Glacier before, now is the time! It is truly my favorite national park and basically in my backyard. I have been exploring and photographing the wonders of the park for over 30 years and know it extremely well.
The workshop will be based out of the small town of St Mary on the park’s more scenic eastern side. We will have many great photo options including wildflowers, waterfalls and wildlife. Two Medicine, St Mary and Many Glacier Valleys will be full of wildflowers and host lakes that can yield stunning reflections on calm mornings. In the past, we have had very good luck photographing moose in a small lake. Bighorn sheep and mountain goats are almost always on hand at Logan Pass so bring your telephoto lens.
The 2nd class will also offer a trip to nearby Browning, Montana where we will spend the late Saturday afternoon and early evening. Sharpen your action photography skills with rodeo action including the famous Indian Relay Races. Traditional Native American dancing and song comes later, we can capture great portraits and enjoy the culture. A small fee will be required for rodeo entry and photo pass.
This class offers a great opportunity to sharpen and improve many aspects of photography skills in a special and unforgettable setting.
EQUIPMENT SUGGESTIONS: A sturdy tripod is a necessity for good landscapes. Participants should have a working knowledge of their equipment (know which button does what!) before the workshop. I suggest a SLR camera with a wide-angle lens (24-105mm is great for landscapes. If birding or wildlife is more of your interest then I would suggest bringing a lens like in the 100-500mm range, or more. We have also had some point-and-shoot shooters attend so don’t feel you have to buy the latest and greatest. There’s a lot to learn just by seeing.
